TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) single ply roofing. TPO Single Ply Roofing looks a lot like PVC but is very different in chemistry. The TPO materials are usually supplied in 45-90 mil thick, with 60 mil thick membrane minimum recommended by NRCA. The product is hot air welded together for a strong bond at the seams and end laps. TPO roofs can be ballasted, adhered or mechanically fastened at the seams of each sheet or to plates, leaving a smooth, reflective surface.

There are many types of plasticizers added for various physical properties from flexibility to chemical and ultra-violet light resistance. Usually the TPO Single Ply Roof is white or very light in color, with shades of tan to white available. Surfacing is either smooth, ballasted with large, round 3/4" river rock, or a vegetative garden topping, pavers or photovoltaic panels can be used over the TPO Roof.
The system has to be installed to the manufacturers installation instructions, the listing, where applicable, and the building code.
